Hippies, their behavior

It is impossible to avoid hippie when we need to talk about 1960s. It was a big counter-culture from San Fransisco to most of Western countries. Most of them are young, like between 17 to 25 and left their family for some reason. They sing, dance, drink and travel everywhere avoiding general lifestyle. They use LSD as a fundamental item and trip to psychedelic world. They mostly wear tie-dyed fabric garment, bell-bottom trousers with hair band or flower crown.

'Summer of Love' occurred  in 1967 on the Haight-Ashbury to create a cultural and political rebellion. 100,000 hippies assembled there.
They often appeal about love and peace, such like the Beatles became  like them.

Space age!

1960s, it was the decade of the beginning of space age.
October 4, 1957, the first human-made object Sputnik launched to orbit to the earth by the Soviet Union. Since then people had became crazy for futuristic style. Many kind of product designers were influenced by the boom. For example, furniture shape became more round shape with chlome or plastic. Ford even made a car which is completely translucent orange body.

July 20, 1969, Finally Apollo 11 landed the first humans on the Moon by the USA. It was watched by over 500 million people around the world and became as one of the historical moments of the 20th century.

Following of these affair, 1960s was exactly space age.

John Galliano and young culture

1990's is for the young generation. And youth became fashion reader. Middle 90's, even the severe recession scar was getting better, the street style had been continuing and absorbing as a mainstream. Denim, mini skirt and baggy trousers with Dr. Martin or Air Max. When the fashion world became like this, how High end brands could be follow with it? Should they keep their legacy, or... like John Galliano?

He introduced denim in Christian Dior collection.
It was very brave, and innovative.
Even he did Christian Dior fashion show like right side image.
So, he, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen, both of them changed long history of couture fashion.
And since then, British couture has become much well recognised and steadied a power of young fashion capital.

John Galliano and his style

He knows what can make women beautiful and sexy. Tight corset and well fit dress, or like this image, rich amount of right weight chiffon and frills.
Those inspirations may be influenced by half of his origin, Spain culture. We can feel his works are all passionable and fascinating.

In the DVD which I watched, there were many fashion show scenes. All models were actress. They jumped, danced, tempted, and acted. His show always has stories. His latest show (A2011 menswear) is now on his website, and we can see all!

THE FACE and Super models

THE FACE had been issued from 1980 to 2004. The best selling period was middle 90s. So, it can say that it is one of  the best magazines describe 1990s very well.
This front cover is Kate Moss who had just appeared on media. She was very remarkable appearance and her unique face immediately filled many fashion magazines.
90s introduced a kind of 'model boom'. Naomi, Linda, Cindy and Claudia... those names are not old memory for us. They became very famous as a part of celebrities. It was back up from improving mass communications such like TV, Video, mobile phone and Internet. Then of course, those fashion acceleration effected to the pubric very much and diffusion expanded rapidly.

A Vintage shop

I found a nice vintage shop which called 'WOW RETRO'. What the different from the others is they have 90s and 00s items as well (I do not think they are vintage though). However, I could not find any particular differences between those two decades. On the other hand, the other generations had obvious unique styles like 60s' hippie, 70s' punk and 80s' disco. I thought that I need to research about 90s more deeply until I become to be able to recognize it immediately.

What happened in 1990s?

My group researches about 1990s fashion. I watched a BBC program which called Style on Trial:1990s to get an abstract knowledge of the decade. The keys are these.

Politic and Economic:
1990-Margaret Thatcher to John Major, severe recession effects fashion style (Minimalism) and high street/super market brands such like Topshop, Next and George flourish.
Sub Culture:
Musicians and Celebrities strongly influence to fashion brands. R&B, Hip Hop and Acid House. Counter-cultural (Tattoo and body piecing) and Burberry Chav.
Designers:
Alexander McQueen and John Galliano
Key trends:
Minimalism, then second hands (vintage?), Denim, Baggy style, Chunky shoes like Dr Martin and Platform.
