Post Hippie? Bohemian Romantic style

Bill Gibb is one of my favourite designers in 1970s. He is often categorized Romantic style which was trend from late 60s to middle 70s. Other big name is Ossie Clark. Both silhouettes have some common points like elegant feminine look with rich volumed skirt and sleeves, layered, gathered or pleated sheer fabric with bold pattern. It was a kind of revival of 50s or even older taste, like Edwardian and Victorian. In that point of view, Laura Ashley will be also similar genre.

however, Bill Gibb's particularly feature is a hint of Bohemian style. It is seemed to come from post Hippie's ethnic inspired style.
Despite he has amazing creativity, his business did not run well. His peak was early 70s, when Ossie Clark was also King of Kings Road, even he was championed by Vogue by his mix of historical references and global influences. But They could not cope with the 80s massive punk rock wave.

Cyberpunk and Gareth Pugh

If I have to choose one famous designer for Cyberpunk, it must be Gareth Pugh. Of course he is not 1970s designer, but his design describes the subculture's ambience well. It is easy to guess that he grew with Science Fiction stories.

After Apollo 11, the computer age has come.

Technology has been improving rapidly since 1960s.

While some computers had appeared in universities and laboratories, Science Fiction got becoming popular. Of course, Computers were very rare and 'unknown futuristic machine' for most of people. only a few specialist could use them. So, people simply imagined and create a lot of images like hackers, virtual real world, artificial intelligence and cyborgs. Actually, now a days, many of their delusions has become real.

To be honest, it was not big trend in 1970s. However, there was surely the seed of Cyberpunk.

An  American SF author, Michael Bruce Sterling (born April 14, 1954) is one of the founders for Cyberpunk. His first Cyberpunk novel published in 1977 and it became popular among youth.

Since Cyberpunk was defined, many art and media are influenced especially film, Manga and Anime.

 

As a part of fashion trends, Cyberpunk often connects to other subcultures. For instance, mixed with Goth became Cybergoth,  and mixed with Nostalgia became Steampunk.

1970s, Overture to 1980s

Many fashion mainstreams had begun in 1970s. These are continuing through 1980s and some of them are still we can see. It means people's lifestyle became more free and many choices. The circumstance has been continuing and accelerating since then.

One main subculture is Punk style. It appeared from young people who started torn clothes. They were anti fashion but Vivienne Westwood ignited and spread it then became a fashion trend.

Nostalgic style also became popular among middle or upper class women. The design revivals 20s or 30s or even older era like Edwardian. Laura Ashley is one of the main designer.

Hippie still remains and some of them changed their style into New Age which consider about simple lifestyle, meditation and ethnic culture. Grunge and Rave were also born in 1970s. Disco fashion with shiny Lycra kept running until the end of 1980s.
