1970s, Overture to 1980s

Many fashion mainstreams had begun in 1970s. These are continuing through 1980s and some of them are still we can see. It means people's lifestyle became more free and many choices. The circumstance has been continuing and accelerating since then.

One main subculture is Punk style. It appeared from young people who started torn clothes. They were anti fashion but Vivienne Westwood ignited and spread it then became a fashion trend.




Nostalgic style also became popular among middle or upper class women. The design revivals 20s or 30s or even older era like Edwardian. Laura Ashley is one of the main designer.







Hippie still remains and some of them changed their style into New Age which consider about simple lifestyle, meditation and ethnic culture. Grunge and Rave were also born in 1970s. Disco fashion with shiny Lycra kept running until the end of 1980s.
